Eating frequently throughout the day is important for maximizing your gains in muscle size and strength and is a key part of any bodybuilding nutrition program.
If you are able to create a bodybuilding nutrition program that is focused around a well balanced muscle building eating schedule with a meal consumed every 2-3 hours, you will remain in an anabolic state, jack-up your fat burning metabolism, maintain high energy levels and get your digestive system working at its best.
Following this type of bodybuilding diet plan during regular daily hours day is easy. But how do you do it when you are asleep?
Taking into account that you most likely eat the last meal of your daily bodybuilding plan about an hour before you go to bed… then you sleep during the night… and eat breakfast about half an hour to hour after you get up….
Thus, about 8 to 9 hours have passed with absolutely NO muscle building nutrition!

It’s not a good idea to let your body endure a starved, catabolic state for such a long time. Thus, there is no reason not to keep up with your bodybuilding nutrition program at night.
Of course, not everyone will want to do this. But if you eat a balanced muscle building meal at some point, preferably midway, through the night you should be able to noticeably speed up your muscle-building results.

Don’t be confused though. The night time meal I am talking about is not a regular solid-food bodybuilding meal such as the ones that you might eat during the day. At night, it wouldn’t do you much good to start eating chicken and potatoes or a salmon with rice.
Eating solid foods in the middle of the night won’t allow you to get a good night’s sleep. Also, it’s not something you can stick to in the long run.
Therefor, your night time meal should be in the form of a liquid meal so that you can consume it quickly and get right back to bed.
This meal should consist of 30 to 40 grams of protein powder (in the form of whey, egg or casein) mixed with 1 to 2 cups of skim milk. This form eliminates meal preparation and chewing time, and will allow you to get right back to bed with a nice dose of slow release protein in your system.
Another good tip is to add a one tablespoon of healthy unsaturated oil like flaxseed oil or extra virgin olive oil. The only way to know this is to try it yourself. After adding this night time meal into my clients’ and my own nutrition program, I have found that the effects were positive.
Most people wake up in the middle of the night anyway to go to the bathroom. Therefor, adding a small detour to the kitchen isn’t such a big challenge.
